Mission Statement

The mission of the Department of Microbiology, Genetics, & Immunology at Michigan State University is to:

  1. Carry out research in microbiology, genetics, & immunology on basic and applied problems relevant to human and animal disease, agriculture, the environment, and industry. All appropriate aspects of science and technology will be employed, as needed, both to generate fundamental knowledge and to solve practical problems.

  2. Teach microbiology, genetics, immunology, and related topics to undergraduate, graduate, and professional students in cooperation with other units. Programs leading to the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. will be rigorous, contemporaneous, and flexible. The opportunity to participate in research will remain an important constituent of these programs. High quality service courses will also be provided.

  3. Provide service appropriate to an academic department in a land-grant institution. This includes service to the University and our constituent Colleges, professional service, international outreach, and service to K-12 education, Federal and State governments, and industry.
